Empty Bowls

 Wednesday, April 30, 2014 * 5:30 p.m.
Hathaway Brown School * 19600 North Park Blvd. * Shaker Heights

The GROW (Girls Reaching Others Worldwide) Foundation at Hathaway Brown School is hosting an Empty Bowls event April 30, 2014, at 5:30 p.m. in the Margery Stouffer Biggar '47 and Family Dining Hall. In partnership with Hathaway Brown Parent Association, California Ceramics, the Stone Oven, and AVI Food Service, GROW invites members from the HB community and Cleveland nonprofits to join us for a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a suggested $10 cash donation at the door, guests are asked to keep a bowl painted by HB students as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world.

This year’s event will highlight the work of Providence House, the nation’s oldest Crisis Nursery. Their mission is to fight to end child abuse and neglect by protecting at-risk children, empowering families in crisis, and building safer communities for every child. The Middle School and Upper School members of GROW selected Providence House to receive a $1,000 HBPA grant award this year to support new programming for their Children’s Education Program and to sponsor emergency shelter in their Crisis Nursery for one child at risk of abuse or neglect for three weeks. The work of GROW’s other grant recipients also will be highlighted.

Our giving cycle this year generated a record 28 proposals asking for nearly $40,000. Our members raised over $7,000 and awarded an additional $6,000 to programs serving the needs of at-risk adolescent girls and young women through their partnership with the Crittenton Foundation. Proceeds from our Empty Bowls event will benefit the GROW Foundation’s 2015 grantees. One of 2014's grant recipients is HER Ideas in Motion, an organization dedicated to providing girls with computer coding, web design, and film making workshops. Read more about the grant and the organization here.

The April 30 Empty Bowls event at HB will include presentations by GROW Foundation student members, along with remarks by Providence House representatives. The meal - which has generously be provided by our sponsors - will give attendees time to reflect about the pervading problems of hunger and homelessness in the United States and abroad.

All are welcome to attend free of charge, and donations to the GROW foundation will be gratefully accepted that evening. Registration is encouraged. To secure space for your family, please visit www.hb.edu/emptybowls or click here

Many thanks to the entire HB community for its ongoing support of GROW and worthy charitable organizations in Northeast Ohio and beyond.
