Click here to sign up today. Feel free to share this information with anyone who may be interested in attending.
Our world is hyper-connected, increasingly globalized, and media-saturated. Life moves fast as families juggle jobs, child-rearing, education, and more. Nobody seems to have enough
downtime. Girls today want to be intentional in the ways in which they personally navigate the environment as they work to make the world a better place. They're committed to connecting their inner lives with an outer purpose. But given all the external forces at play in our culture, adopting a more personally fulfilling outlook can be a serious challenge.
At Hathaway Brown, we're committed to helping girls and young women leverage their talents and capabilities while working to find balance in their lives. In fact, a key component of the school's new strategic plan is to Promote Lives of Balance and Well-Being. To that end, after her talk on March 31, Dr. Steiner-Adair will stay on at HB on April 1 to spend time with faculty, staff, school administrators, and students to consult on such topics as the impact of technology on the young adult brain, social and emotional intelligence, and the development of girls and women. Dr. Steiner-Adair's passion for helping adults raise strong, savvy and resilient children extends to boys and girls from preschool through college. Her latest book, The Big Disconnect: Protecting Childhood and Family Relationships in the Digital Age (HarperCollins) examines the ways in which technology and media change how children learn and grow, and shows parents how to balance the benefits of tech while reducing the risks it poses at every stage of development. She also is the co-author of Full of Ourselves: A Wellness Program to Advance Girl Power, Health, And Leadership, which provides a well-researched and proven curriculum focused on girls' intellectual and emotional development.
To register for the March 31 presentation at 7 p.m., please visit www.hb.edu/csa. For questions about the event, contact Kathleen Osborne, HB's director of communication and outreach, at 216.320.8785 or kosborne@hb.edu. Hathaway Brown Robotics Team Qualifies For FIRST World Championship
The Hathaway Brown FIRST Robotics Team 2399, the Fighting Unicorns, won the prestigious Engineering Inspiration Award at the Greater Pittsburgh Regional Tournament on March 7, 2015. According to US FIRST Robotics, "This award celebrates outstanding success in advancing respect and appreciation for engineering within a team’s school and community." In addition to receiving a trophy and medals for the team, The Fighting Unicorns also qualify for the FIRST Robotics Competition World Championship in St. Louis, April 22-25. This is the first time that The Fighting Unicorns have ever qualified.
Team 2399’s efforts in the community made judges take notice. As the only all-girls FIRST Robotics team in Northeast Ohio, the Fighting Unicorns make it their responsibility to spread the word about engineering, computer science, and robotics throughout the school and the wider community. In addition to helping mentor two FIRST Lego League Teams, and refereeing and judging at FLL Tournaments, team members demonstrated their robot at the Ohio STEM Meeting at the Ohio Aerospace Institute in October and ran a workshop for Boys Hope Girls Hope of Northeast Ohio in November. The team also helped mentor a new FRC team at Parma Constellation Schools Community High and offered them open access to HB's equipment. In the spring, the girls will assist with an after-school robotics club for grades 4-9 and run an afternoon workshop for the entire 8th grade. Likewise, Team 2399 is guiding the enhancement of Hathaway Brown’s expanding engineering efforts. Several of the girls are on the design team for HB’s new Fab Lab.
Not content to wait for the trip to St. Louis, the Fighting Unicorns also competed at the Buckeye Regional FIRST Robotics Competition on March 26-28 at the Cleveland State University Wolstein Center. Team 2399 had a tremendous weekend and was chosen by the Broncobots of Lee's Summit, MO to join them and the Robocards from St. Charles Prep in Columbus in the playoffs on Saturday, March 28. The alliance placed third overall, missing a shot at the final round by 3 points. In their final match, Team 2399's alliance actually beat the alliance that went on the win the whole tournament, in a remarkable 162-130 battle.
There's a still a way to see the Fighting Unicorns' programming skills in action. Click here watch the team's interview with WKYC Channel 3 anchor Russ Mitchell on March 31. Also support Team 2399's trip to St. Louis by purchasing your own Fighting Unicorns t-shirt here! Shirts are $20 apiece.
Congratulations to Team 2399 and a special thank you to our volunteer mentors who make this team a reality!

HB figure skaters are blazing on ice
Last weekend, five skaters represented Hathaway Brown at the first-ever High School Final competition, a national event sanctioned by the U.S. Figure Skating Association. The program was held in Strongsville, Ohio, and skaters from several states came together to showcase their skills and compete for both individual and team titles.
Cristina Rackley '18 won gold medals for her performances in both the Junior Ladies short program and Junior Ladies Championship. She captivated all those who had the pleasure of watching her skate with her grace and impressive repertoire of athletic jumps, spins and connecting steps, including a difficult double-axel jump.
Leonela Serrano '18 skated a beautiful Preliminary Freestyle program and displayed new levels of confidence, poise, and presentation - characteristics that she exudes both on and off the ice.
Alyssa Jhirad '18, Erica Kahn '18, Maddie Fresco '18, and Leonela Serrano '18 represented Hathaway Brown in Team Maneuvers, an event that showcases the collective team’s strongest jumps, spins, and moves in the field. The team, coached by HB Middle School Spanish teacher Maya Edwards, placed third overall, earning bronze medals.
Congratulations also go to team members Alex Deutchman '19, Alyssa Jhirad '18, Erica Kahn '18, Reese Legan '21, Maddie Shade '16, Tina Rackley '18, Leonela Serrano '18, and Sarinna Vasavada '18 for their outstanding showings.
In February, eight skaters from the Middle and Upper School represented Hathaway Brown at the Ohio High School Figure Skating Championships. They skated events including compulsory moves, ice dance, team maneuvers, and freestyle programs. For the first time ever, HB skaters earned a first-place finish overall in team maneuvers and several girls additionally brought home medals in their individual events.
Additionally, HB junior Maddie Shade '16 is a member of Mentor Figure Skating Club’s Ice Diamonds Synchronized Skating Intermediate Team. Her team qualified this year for the U.S. Figure Skating National Synchronized Skating Championships held in Rhode Island, and they brought home the bronze medal. Read more here.
