For the seventh year in a row, Hathaway Brown is honored to be recognized as a NEO Success Award winner by Inside Business magazine. For the last 20 years, the publication has paid tribute to the region's top-performing public and private companies through this program.

This year's 81 NEO Success Award winners were chosen based on how they reflect and represent the rich cultural, business, innovation, and education environment in Northeast Ohio. According to Inside Business, these organizations "have shown what it means to be successful - growing revenue, adding employees, and making a profit - throughout the last three years. They are examples of what keeps Northeast Ohio moving."

In addition to acknowledgement in the magazine's March/April 2014 issue, the school will be honored at a special awards luncheon on March 27 at Executive Caterers of Landerhaven.

Empty Bowls

 Wednesday, April 30, 2014 * 5:30 p.m.
Hathaway Brown School * 19600 North Park Blvd. * Shaker Heights

The GROW (Girls Reaching Others Worldwide) Foundation at Hathaway Brown School is hosting an Empty Bowls event April 30, 2014, at 5:30 p.m. in the Margery Stouffer Biggar '47 and Family Dining Hall. In partnership with Hathaway Brown Parent Association, California Ceramics, the Stone Oven, and AVI Food Service, GROW invites members from the HB community and Cleveland nonprofits to join us for a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a suggested $10 cash donation at the door, guests are asked to keep a bowl painted by HB students as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world.

This year’s event will highlight the work of Providence House, the nation’s oldest Crisis Nursery. Their mission is to fight to end child abuse and neglect by protecting at-risk children, empowering families in crisis, and building safer communities for every child. The Middle School and Upper School members of GROW selected Providence House to receive a $1,000 HBPA grant award this year to support new programming for their Children’s Education Program and to sponsor emergency shelter in their Crisis Nursery for one child at risk of abuse or neglect for three weeks. The work of GROW’s other grant recipients also will be highlighted.

Our giving cycle this year generated a record 28 proposals asking for nearly $40,000. Our members raised over $7,000 and awarded an additional $6,000 to programs serving the needs of at-risk adolescent girls and young women through their partnership with the Crittenton Foundation. Proceeds from our Empty Bowls event will benefit the GROW Foundation’s 2015 grantees.

The April 30 Empty Bowls event at HB will include presentations by GROW Foundation student members, along with remarks by Providence House representatives. The meal - which has generously be provided by our sponsors - will give attendees time to reflect about the pervading problems of hunger and homelessness in the United States and abroad.

All are welcome to attend free of charge, and donations to the GROW foundation will be gratefully accepted that evening. Registration is encouraged. To secure space for your family, please visit www.hb.edu/emptybowls or click here

Many thanks to the entire HB community for its ongoing support of GROW and worthy charitable organizations in Northeast Ohio and beyond.

On March 8, sophomore Isabel Weil '16 competed in the 9th Annual "Chinese Bridge" US High School Student Chinese Speech Contest, finishing third in a field of 24 competitors. The program was held at the Confucius Institute of University of Massachusetts Boston.

To qualify for the contest, students must submit a 3-4 minute audio file of their speech as well as English and Chinese scripts. Qualifiers get the opportunity to present their speeches to a panel of judges and take questions regarding their speech afterwards.

HB teacher Elaine Hu notes Isabel's achievement is the result of "oustandingly hard work" on the language in less than two years' time.

Isabel is the fourth HB girl in as many years to qualify for the competition.

Congratulations to Isabel on this impressive achievement!

HB's Fighting Unicorns Gear Up For Buckeye FIRST Robotics Competition

Though most of the campus is quiet during Spring Break, Hathaway Brown's robotics team, Team 2399, aka The Fighting Unicorns, has been hard at work preparing for this weekend's Buckeye FIRST Robotics Competition. The event, set to take place at The Wolstein Center at Cleveland State University, runs from March 20-22 and features dozens of robotics teams from Northeast Ohio. Attendance is free and open to the public.

As it has been for several years, Hathaway Brown is the only all girls' team in Northeast Ohio, with more than 20 Upper School students participating. This unique distinction caught the attention of Cleveland's ABC affiliate, WEWS NewsChannel 5 and earned Team 2399 a feature on Wednesday's edition of "The List." During her interview, team captain Grace Phillips '14 was quick to mention the importance of HB's participation. "We're doing a good thing here," said Grace, "getting more girls into the competition."

While the first day of the competition is used for practice, the Fighting Unicorns are particularly excited about the competition rounds that feature challenges involving passing a large exercise ball through a hoop that's approximately seven feet high. Their robot was designed to handle the challenges in a number of versatile ways, including by lifting the ball with a strong claw-like arm and by kicking it with a metal "foot."

Good luck to our young engineers this weekend.

Center for Sustainability Addresses the "Elephant in the Room"

As you descend into the Hathaway Brown Atrium this week, it's hard to ignore the herd of cardboard elephants huddled in a circle. At first glance, the display appears to be a demonstration of student artwork, but upon further examination its true purpose is revealed. The installation, titled "Elephant in the Room," is part of the Center for Sustainability's efforts to promote discussion about waste reduction and the three Rs: reduce, reuse, recycle. "Nobody really wants to talk about waste," said Center for Sustainability Director Torrey McMillan '90. "It's easier to just think about waste going away."

Made from old boxes and science fair projects, each elephant carries a common form of household waste and has an information sheet on its saddle with suggestions about how to reduce, reuse and recycle that type of item, as well as background information on the item as part of our waste stream. Inspiration for this exhibit was taken from Sustainable Cleveland's "Year of Zero Waste" initiative.

But the elephants', nor the Center's, efforts end in the Atrium. Soon, the elephants will travel to various locations on HB's campus to promote further discussion about waste reduction, and the Center will be restarting its school-wide food waste composting program this month.
