HB's Speech and Debate team members — Ryan Brady '20, Shruthi Ravichandran ’21, and Sejal Sangani '20 — have advanced to the Sweet 16 in the International Public Policy Forum debate competition. The top 16 teams represent nine U.S. states, Canada, China, Mongolia, Republic of Korea, and Vietnam.

Brady, Li, and Sangani are debating a Korean team to reach the Elite 8 for a chance to earn an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City for a live debate. In this year’s competition, students write detailed essays based on the following prompt: Resolved — When in conflict, a nation’s self-interest should outweigh its international commitments to migrants.

The IPPF is an international competition of “written debate” in partnership with New York University. It is the only contest that gives high school students around the world the opportunity to engage in written and oral debates on issues of public policy.
