The scholars were selected on the basis of their exceptional promise as scientists, excellent record of academic achievement and outstanding recommendations from teachers and other scientists.
Regeneron STS scholars and their schools each receive $2,000 to use toward STEM-related activities. Anya also is in the running to become one of the top 40 finalists, who will be announced on Wednesday, January 22. Only four Ohio students earned this scholar designation this year.
Anya’s project, Impact of Haltere Removal on Gravitational Perception and Takeoff in Dipteran Insects, has been developed over the course of two years in the lab of Dr. Jessica Fox in the Department of Biology at Case Western Reserve University. The lab focuses on sensory systems and how information is processed in the brain to coordinate behavior. Anya used a variety of flies as her model system to understand the role of halteres in sensing gravity.
