This weekend the speech and debate team split up and attended both the Vermilion High School tournament and the GlenOak High School tournament in Canton.  Even without the entire junior class, the team turned in some very impressive individual performances:

At Vermilion:

  • Aly Bryan '13 3rd place U.S. Extemporaneous Speaking
  • Riya Jagetia 3rd place International Extemporaneous Speaking
  • Katie McCarthy '16 6th place Prose/Poetry Reading

At GlenOak (largest debate tournament in the state each year):

Brenna Scully '13 and Gurbani Kaur '13 both advanced to the elimination rounds after having impressive 4-2 records in the preliminary debates.

Aarathi Sahadevan and Lexi Anderson in Public Forum debate finished 8th overall (in a field of more than 60) with a 5-1 record.  This was the first time in school history that a public forum debate team from HB advanced to the elimination rounds of a tournament.

The policy debate team of Lulu Sun '14/Joey Gwinnell '14 were points away from pre-qualifying to the state tournament, ending the competition with a 3-2 record overall

All of the novice debaters that we sent to this very difficult tournament (Evie Schumann '16, Anna Lietman '16, Isabella Nilsson '16, and Sue Roy '15) all ended up with .500 records, a very impressive accomplishment given the caliber of the competition.

This Saturday those few members of the team feeling confident about their exam prep will travel to Stow and CVCA for the last tournament of 2012.

Congratulations to these girls on their accomplishments!
