The Art, Poetry, and Essay Contest is an annual contest open to all students, grades K-12, in Cuyahoga, Ashtabula, Lake, Geauga, Lorain, Medina, Summit, and Portage counties. In 2012 students were asked to share their thoughts and feelings on ‘Local and Sustainable Food’ through drawings, paintings, photography, essays, or poetry.

Topics were created in three grade-specific categories to guide students with the content of their entries. Entries were judged on understanding of the environmental topic, creativity, and originality. Spelling and grammar are also considered for written entries.

Winning entries were also displayed at Earth Day Coalition’s EarthFest 2012 at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo on April 22, 2012 for thousands of visitors to see. Each winner received the acclaimed Hope and Stanley Adelstein Award for Excellence presented by Cleveland dignitaries at the EarthFest 2012 Welcoming Ceremonies.

Thirty students from the diverse Northeast Ohio communities of Avon, Brook Park, Cleveland, Columbia Station, Doylestown, Fairview Park, Highland Heights, Lakewood, Middleburg Heights, Parma Heights, Strongsville, University Heights, Wadsworth and Westlake were honored for their outstanding contributions.

The Art, Poetry, and Essay Contest encourages Northeast Ohio students to celebrate Earth Day by expressing their ideas for solutions to environmental issues facing our community.
