For the last few months, 40 Primary School students have been using their lunch and play periods to hone their entrepreneurial skills. With the help of Primary School Director Kathy Zopatti and Upper School volunteers from the Center for Business and Finance, the girls developed innovative business plans for their companies, which go live tomorrow.
We had six successful Lemonade Day stands stationed across Northeast Ohio last week. Thank you so much to all those who came out and supported the girls in this terrific effort.

Lemonade Day Is Coming To Northeast Ohio
Kids Earn Profits, Learn Business Lessons and
The Importance of Giving Back
When the warm weather arrives, lemonade stands seem to pop up everywhere as kids make pitchers of lemonade and carefully prepared signs to entice passersby to a refreshing glass of lemonade. What makes it even more fun is earning a buck or two in the process.
This year, over 1,300 Northeast Ohio kids will participate in Lemonade Day, a free, community-wide program dedicated to teaching children how to start, own and operate their own business through the simple and time-honored act of building and running a lemonade stand. The young entrepreneurs will be setting up stands on weekends throughout the months of May and June to learn a valuable lesson for business success: don’t wait to find a job, create one!
“Lemonade Day is a great way to get young kids excited about entrepreneurship,” said University School’s Greg Malkin, Regional Director of Lemonade Day Northeast Ohio 2012. “These are valuable life lessons no matter what your career.”
On Lemonade Day, everyone has a job – either buying or selling lemonade. Northeast Ohio residents are encouraged to simply purchase a cup of lemonade from a youth participating in the program. Be sure to ask the young entrepreneurs about their business – how did they set their price, choose their location, and develop their recipe.
“It’s a high profile event,” said Deborah Hoover, president of The Burton D. Morgan Foundation, a founding partner of Lemonade Day Northeast Ohio. “Lemonade Day involves community and youth to create future business leaders in Northeast Ohio.”
In addition to learning real life skills by owning and operating their own business, Lemonade Day participants also gain the opportunity to “spend a little, save a little and share a little,” by donating a portion of their profits to a local charity of their choice. After covering expenses and paying back their investors, the children are encouraged to open a youth savings account.
The Lemonade Day curriculum will be taught and leadership will be provided by the following schools and organizations: Emmanuel Christian Academy, Gilmour Academy, Girl Scouts of North East Ohio, Hathaway Brown School, Hattie Larlham, Hawken School, Hudson City Schools, Hudson Montessori School, Junior Achievement, Vision 21 (Lakewood), Laurel School, National Inventors Hall of Fame School (Akron Public Schools), Old Trail School, Seton Catholic School, Streetsboro City Schools, University Park Alliance, University School, Walsh University, Cleveland Heights Boys and Girls Club, and Wooster City School District.
This free program is made possible through the generous support of the Founding Partners - The Burton D. Morgan Foundation and University School; and Corporate and Foundation Partners - Knight Foundation, Hudson Economic Development Corporation, Heinen’s Fine Foods, Veale Foundation, and Kovach Design.

About Lemonade Day
Lemonade Day is a part of Prepared 4 Life, a non-profit that provides fun, proactive and experiential programs infused with life skills, character education and entrepreneurship. Lemonade Day was born in Houston in 2007, and was inspired by the lessons local entrepreneur and philanthropist, Michael Holthouse, taught his young daughter and her friend when they set-up their own lemonade stand. Since then it has grown to a nationwide program, and in 2011 Lemonade Day expanded to over 30 cities, educating more than 120,000 kids.
About the Entrepreneur Institute at University School
University School’s Entrepreneur Institute is leading the Lemonade Day initiative in Northeast Ohio. The Institute was founded by Greg Malkin in 2006 to focus on teaching entrepreneurship to students in grades K – 12 at schools and organizations across Northeast Ohio.
