Though most of the campus is quiet during Spring Break, Hathaway Brown's robotics team, Team 2399, aka The Fighting Unicorns, has been hard at work preparing for this weekend's Buckeye FIRST Robotics Competition. The event, set to take place at The Wolstein Center at Cleveland State University, runs from March 20-22 and features dozens of robotics teams from Northeast Ohio. Attendance is free and open to the public.

As it has been for several years, Hathaway Brown is the only all girls' team in Northeast Ohio, with more than 20 Upper School students participating. This unique distinction caught the attention of Cleveland's ABC affiliate, WEWS NewsChannel 5 and earned Team 2399 a feature on Wednesday's edition of "The List." During her interview, team captain Grace Phillips '14 was quick to mention the importance of HB's participation. "We're doing a good thing here," said Grace, "getting more girls into the competition."

While the first day of the competition is used for practice, the Fighting Unicorns are particularly excited about the competition rounds that feature challenges involving passing a large exercise ball through a hoop that's approximately seven feet high. Their robot was designed to handle the challenges in a number of versatile ways, including by lifting the ball with a strong claw-like arm and by kicking it with a metal "foot."

Good luck to our young engineers this weekend.
