Saturday, December 7, Hathaway Brown School will once again host a Northeast Ohio regional competition for the FIRST LEGO League. FLL teams are comprised of up to 10 students ages 9-14 and offer an opportunity for young people to use their interest in science and engineering to solve real problems. Each year, FIRST presents a mission challenge, and the teams have approximately 10 weeks to design a robot to accomplish the mission. This year’s mission, NATURE’S FURY, focuses on natural disasters. Children from over 70 countries will explore the awe-inspiring storms, quakes, waves and more that we call natural disasters. Teams will discover what can be done when intense natural events meet the places people live, work, and play.

Twenty teams from Northeast Ohio will join together to present their research and solutions, demonstrate their “gracious professionalism,” a core value of FIRST, and share their robots, designed to master this year’s NATURE’S FURY mission. The afternoon program of robot competitions will take place from 1:00-3:00 p.m. and will be open to the public. There is no admission fee.

Hathaway Brown is proud to contribute to STEM education in Northeast Ohio by hosting this event. FLL values problem-solving, discovery, collaboration, and friendly competition. This is a great opportunity for students to learn important skills and have fun at the same time.

All of the students design, build, and program their robots to complete a variety of assignments. It’s fun to see how these young engineers create solutions to problems that arise and get their machines to drive through obstacles and follow through with the tasks at hand.

The competition offers great video, photography, and interview opportunities. It is open to members of the media. For more information about FIRST LEGO and the NATURE’S FURY competition, please visit http://www.firstlegoleague.org/challenge/2013naturesfury.
