Winter Celebration and Ideo Procession - Noon Dismissal
Winter Break begins at the end of the day
Please join us for our Winter Celebration and Ideo Procession, a tradition at Hathaway Brown since 1939, established by Anne Cutter Coburn in her second year as Headmistress. Dismayed by the unceremonious dismissal of students before winter break, Miss Coburn began a tradition of gift giving and passage that we carry on today. As a gift to the community, students give performances in music, dance and theater. Mentors gift the Seniors with a red rose, Seniors give the Juniors a white rose, fifth through eighth graders process through the halls singing Miss Coburn’s favorite carol, Ideo, as a gift to the Head. The Seniors sing Bless this House to the School, and Mr. Christ has added his own tradition, a gift of poem to the Senior class. This Winter Celebration recognizes the legacy left to us by our HB sisters of the past. While we do continue the tradition, we also recognize the diversity of beliefs in the HB community today. We invite all students to participate in this Hathaway Brown tradition, the second in a trio of processions that mark the milestones of the senior year; however, students who prefer not to be in the procession are welcome to join their HB sisters in the gym for the reading of Mr. Christ’s poem.
