Cooking Up a Fun Recipe for Education

Hathaway Brown students have fun while learning lifelong healthy habits with
Sodexo Future Chefs: Healthy Salad Challenge

Elementary school students at Hathaway Brown will learn about the importance of healthy eating while honing their culinary skills thanks to education partner and Quality of Life services provider Sodexo and its annual Future Chefs: Healthy Salad Challenge. The national program, which is in its third year and part of Sodexo’s commitment to bolstering communities by promoting well-being in support of achievement, was created to get students thinking about making healthy food choices in life while also encouraging them to get active and creative in the kitchen. Hathaway Brown students are joining more than 1,750 other students at 943 Sodexo-served school sites in 28 states nationally in this fun and educational challenge.

Third grade elementary school students submitted healthy salad recipes and the five best were selected to participate in the district-wide finals event. Finalists will prepare and present their creations before being assessed on criteria including originality, taste, presentation, kid friendliness and use of healthy ingredients. Hathaway Brown joins more than 140 other school districts across the country holding Future Chefs events throughout February and March. The winning student from each participating district will be considered for 27 regional finalist awards, and the 27 regional finalists will vie to become one of five national finalists competing for public votes for their favorite recipe on a special Future Chefs YouTube channel.

Our distinguished panel of judges for this event include author and culinary expert Michael Ruhlman, More Than Gourmet CEO and Founder Brad Sacks, and HB’s Associate Head for Finance & Adminstration Valerie Hughes. Ruhlman often serves as a judge on the Food Network’s “Iron Chef America” program.

Sodexo, a partner in First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move initiative to end childhood obesity, is committed to take measurable sustainable actions that ensure a brighter future in the areas of health and wellness, environmental stewardship and community development. Sodexo focuses on nutrition, achievement, environment, community and activity to create healthy learning environments which promote student well-being.
